Wednesday morning, United NY, La Fuente, and New York Communities for Change, and Make the Road NY rocked 30 Rock when we protested outside of General Electric’s midtown headquarters to say that corporations can no longer get away with not paying their fair share of taxes. G.E. did not it’s fair share of taxes from 2008 to 2010, a matter of billions of dollars, contributing to our country’s debt and a burden on working families and the elderly. Now Congress is debating cuts to services like Social Security and Medicare. Cuts to these vital services would equal serious consequences to our communities, but the hazard would be lessened if corporations created jobs, and paid their fair share of taxes, just like everyday workers.
We’re tired of loopholes that allow these businesses a way out of their financial responsibilities that have seriously affected our economy. Corporations continue to go unpunished while millions struggle to provide for their families. It’s time for companies like G.E., and the other wealthy Americans and corporations behind the “Fix the Debt” campaign to help fix America’s debt and start paying what they owe.
